 bad mistake
« Thread Started on Jul 10, 2003, 4:01am »

When we set up our coldwater marine we set the tank up with the water and added natural seasalt (or so we thought) let it all sit a while, then went to the beach to collect some samples
24 hrs later we had 3 dead crabs, 3 dead starfish, a bundle of muscles, cockles and 2 anenomie, we both felt terrible and wondered where we wnet wrong.
So I hunted for advice all over the internet (which we should have done before) and every site says DO NOT use natural sea salt unless it is marine salt from an aquarists which was our fatal mistake.

Please, please anyone read up on something before jumping in, we usually do, we go through our books and talk to people and then go for it but not this time :(
we are now sitting with an empty 4ft tank and dont know whether to go again or not now :(

Oh that sounds horrible :'(
I think I have read that somewhere else before about the natural stuff. My dad has a 55 gal salt tank, but for some reason he can't seem to get the algae out of it!
I hope you do another salt tank. ;)
They really are beautiful and so much fun to look after (At least I think) But hey now you know something not to do. We all learn from our mistanks ( Get it?) LOL :P

actually over 50% of ppl w/ tanks that fail on the first try just sell them or give them away, which is a mistake *or misTANK, nice one heather!* usually because of lack of knowledge... im sure that u wanted the best 4 them, but sometimes its better 2 learn from them than 2 do it right then 1 day it all goes wrong on u (has happened 2 me b4!) im sure the tank is worth a pretty penny, and leaving it would be a waste, ask around and reasearch, reasearch, research! buy books, wait about a month b4 u dive in and get all the facts... because if u forgot something important than somewhere in that month u will remember and go out and get it, and u will have the time 2 set it up right, so start again and if it doesn't work, get a freshwater tank! lol j/k!
