Hey, I was just reading on the net somewhere that angels can be aggresive towards eachother - often killing eachother..I'm pretty worried cause they seem so peaceful..And I plan on upgrading to big tank to accommodate 3 or 4..Is it to do with the sexes??thanx

Angels become aggressive mainly because of mating. If 2 angels are picking on one or more of the others it is likely that the 2 aggressive ones are a pair and don't want the other(s) around. If it is just 2 of them fighting then they either are a pair, or they are 2 males fighting for a female. If you have more than 2 angels in a tank you should have another tank available to move the 'extras' to. Fighting is fairly common among angels and is not of great concern unless your angels show signs of great distress. I have had a pair that would liplock each other to the bottom of the tank a few days before spawning. They were the most prolific spawners I have ever had and took great care of their fry. Battles between males or between a pair and an outsider can be deadly. I currently have 14 angels in one tank with no aggression problems as of yet.
My best advice is that if you have a number of angels keep a close eye on your angels, give them lots of room and tall plants for them to hide in. For the most, angels can be kept in groups with minimal problems. They have definite personalities which vary from peaceful to highly aggressive. Experience has shown me that the most aggressive angels are the best breeders and should be kept separate from the others.

hey thanks plac..I suppose it's observational trial and error..one last question...in my LFS there are always a couple of large angels for sale (about 3ins across) and in other tanks loads of tiny ones (about 1 1/2 ins)..I would like to buy a larger pair which are hopefully established partners..I now realize it may be risky to also introduce say 2 smaller ones...so would I be best to stick to the larger pair OR buy a small shoal of small ones that will grow up together.i realize when they are at spawning age they can become funny but I really wanted at least 4...hope that makes sense...thanks

Angels will be aggressive, depending upon the situation. If you get a group of young Angels and raise them together, they will be fine...unless you get a pair which wants to spawn. If you introduce Angels to a tank population of Angels that has been there for a long time (they will be set in their ways), the risk of aggression from the Angels which have been there for a while is rather high. Angels can be territorial. After all, they are cichlids I have a single 5in Golden Marble Angel in my 55 gallon tank. He rules the tank - any fish that gets a lil' too close to him gets rushed at!
